The Advantages of Ductless Mini-Split Systems

ductless-mini-splitSummers are too hot and humid in our part of the world to go without proper air conditioning in your home, and while most homes are accustomed to traditional centralized air conditioning systems, they’re not the only type of system out there. Ductless mini-split systems provide a viable alternative for homes that can support a centralized system, or homes whose older centralized system just isn’t doing the job. What are ductless mini-split systems and what kind of advantages do they provide? Read on for the answers.

A Decentralized Format

Centralized air conditioners cool the air in a single main unit, then blow it through your home with a series of ducts. As you probably deduced from their name, ductless mini-split systems do away with the ducts. Instead, they place multiple smaller units throughout your house, each one charged with cooling a single room or section. Each unit can be operated independently of the rest of the house, though most also have a master control panel allowing you to adjust the whole system from a single location in the home.

The Benefits

Not every home is right for a ductless system, and if your centralized system is working just fine, there’s no need to change. But for homes struggling with centralized systems or unable to support a centralized system, the benefits of ductless mini-splits are considerable. They break down into three basic categories:

  1. No Ducts. Older homes built before the advent of air conditioning might not be able to accommodate a centralized system, leaving the residents to depend on window box units, portable units and the like. Ductless mini split systems provide comprehensive coverage for your entire home, without having to deal with the thorny question of ducts.
  2. Precise Control. This is more of a luxury than a necessity, but it can still make a big difference in the quality of your life. Say you’re in the kitchen cooking dinner over a hot stove. You’d like to lower the temperature in the kitchen to compensate for the heat. But another family member is playing video games in the living room and the same AC setting that makes you perfectly comfortable will feel freezing cold to them. Ductless systems allow you both to set the temperature you want without having to compromise.
  3. Lower Bills and Less Wear. By taking the above benefit to its logical extreme, the true value of ductless systems becomes known. You can turn off the air in parts of the home you don’t use during the day (such as bedrooms or rooms on an upper story) while still running it in parts of the home you are occupying. That cuts down on your monthly air conditioning bills considerably, while still letting you maintain a comfortable environment during the day. Over time, it will also reduce wear and tear on the system: cutting down on the need for repair and often extending the overall life of the system.
