Ice on Your Condenser Coil: Here’s What to Do

So, you’ve walked outside to do some gardening, or perhaps you’re going to mow the lawn for the Fourth of July, and you see ice growing on the condenser coil of your air conditioner. You’re smart enough to view this as a strange occurrence, so you start looking up the symptoms online to see how serious of a problem it is.

Well, congratulations! You’re one of the few AC owners that actually register this as a problem and the first step towards fixing it is learning about it. Ice growing on your air conditioner is never a good thing, and it most likely means you need air conditioning repair in Hammond, LA. There could be several things wrong with it, and only a licensed professional like the ones from our team will be able to get to the bottom of it and fix it properly.

Why Is There Ice?

Ice grows when two conditions are met–there has to be moisture somewhere in the vicinity, and the temperature has to drop below freezing. Both of these might sound impossible when looking at your air conditioner, but they’re actually more likely occurrences than you think!

Moisture exists in the air, and it condenses on the coils of your air conditioner when the system is running. Normally, the water would just run into the condensation drain and get out of your home, but if temperatures are running too low, it will quickly freeze.

Temperatures can run low for the same reason that your freezer runs below freezing. Your AC is designed to cool a large area, several thousand square feet in most cases. If it’s not running properly and unable to send that cool air out, it will just cool the immediate space inside of it, supercooling it to freezing temperatures. Yikes!

Why Ice Is Bad

Ice is bad because it doesn’t actually help with the cooling of your home. When you see ice, you might think of the coziness that comes from the Holiday Season, but in actuality, that ice is inhibiting your comfort and causing your home to be hotter. All of that cool air that should be going into the rooms of your house is actually just staying in the system and growing ice!

3 Reasons for Growing Ice

Here are three reasons that ice might grow on your AC’s coils.

  1. Refrigerant leak. Without proper refrigerant levels, the system will be unable to disperse heat correctly. This causes the air temperature to drop too low.
  2. Clogged air filter. If the air filter is clogged, the system won’t be able to cycle air effectively. This can also lead to air temperature levels dropping substantially inside the system.
  3. A broken blower fan. The blower fan is responsible for pushing the cooled air through your air ducts. Without that component, the air might get stuck inside the system and cool too much.
