Common Air Conditioning Misconceptions

Hammond, LA is a hot city, and we’re not just referring to the gumbo. High temperatures and stifling humidity are par of the course, and a reliable air conditioner can often be your best friend in the summer months.

But even if you have the most efficient air conditioner on the market, you could be wasting a huge amount of energy simply because you adhere to certain myths and misconceptions about how the system works. Air conditioners are staples of our homes, but they can be complex pieces of equipment, and being able to run one isn’t the same as knowing how they work. By dispensing with those myths, you can save a great deal of money on cooling costs.

Myth #1: Running the AC All Day Saves Money

It sounds counter-intuitive, but there’s actually a fair amount of logic to this myth. Air conditioners use more energy turning on than they do simply running, so why not turn them on in the morning when it’s cool and just let them run? The sentiments are understandable, but the overall effect makes lies out of it. Better to turn your AC on to a hot house when you get home than let it run all day. Better yet, use your thermostat to turn the air on 20 minutes before you get home and enjoy a cool house without wasting energy.

Myth #2: Lowering the Thermostat Cools Your Home More Quickly

The theory behind this myth goes that lowering the thermostat makes the air conditioner produce cooler air and thus makes for a faster cool-down time in your home. Unfortunately, air conditioners are either on or off, and the air they produce is always the same temperature. (The length of the running time determines how cool it gets.) Set the thermostat at the temperature you want and you’ll be surprised how much you save.
